MAQUOKETA, Iowa - William J. McAndrew, 72 of rural Maquoketa, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, Andrew, with the Rev. Clayton Lander, officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where there will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on April 25, 1930, in Lost Nation, son of Francis Paul and Mary (Noring) McAndrew. He married Joyce T. Budde on Oct. 16, 1951, in Clarksville, Tenn.

He farmed all of his life in Andrew, Lost Nation and Maquoketa. He was a combat engineer in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and the Andrew and Jackson County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed working on his farm machinery with his brother, Francis, and enjoyed animated conversations with friends and family members.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce McAndrew, of Maquoketa; six daughters, Linda (Jack) Johnson, of Solon, Maurna L. McAndrew, of Moline, Ill., Patty (Duane) Hogans, of Des Moines, Julie (Michael) Delaney, of La Motte, Anne (Dennis) Albrecht, of Parker, Colo., and Kerry (Andrew) Arends, of Waseca, Minn.; four sons, Dennis (Angie) McAndrew, of Maquoketa, John J. McAndrew, of Delmar, William M. (Ann) McAndrew, of Wildwood, Mo., and Thomas M. McAndrew, of Denver, Colo.; 22 grandchildren; two sisters, Mary (Alfred) Schwager, of Andrew, and Jean (Lee) Eganhouse, of Monmouth; and a brother, Francis McAndrew, of Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
