OBITUARY

James M. Skinner was born in Monmouth Township, Jackson County, Iowa, January 20, 1847 and departed this life at the home of his son Thurman in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Skinner, who were among the earliest settlers of Monmouth Township. He received such a common education as his day afforded. In after years he prospered as a farmer and a citizen and held different offices of public trust with credit. About thirteen years ago he made his home in the southwest, where he lived until a few months ago when he came to his son's home in Lincoln.

He was united in marriage to Mary Keiser of Cedar County in December of 1869. Six children were born to this union, Mrs. Hattie Scott of Rogel, Kansas, James W. and Thurman M. of Lincoln, who still remain, while Mrs. Jessie Bradley passed away eleven years ago in El Reno, Oklahoma and two children dying in infancy. The death of his wife came fifteen years ago. In 1864 he enlisted in the 44th Iowa Infantry serving nearly five months, when he was mustered out and received an honorable discharge. In his last days to one in attendance he gave evidence that his earthly life was closing in the Christian's hope and peace. He was a member of the Masonic order, having reached the degree chapter Mason. The body was brought here Monday evening October 4, 1915 and taken to the home of his sister Julia Wivines. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church on Wednesday conducted by Rev. W. R. Mallott, burial taking place at Pence cemetery. Relatives present at the funeral were his sister, Mrs. Margaret Watson, a sister of Pulges, Nebraska, Mrs. Hattie Scott, James W. and Thurman M. Skinner.
