William J. Campbell of Preston, ended his life on Armistice Day, November 11th, at Davenport, by shooting himself through the heart. The deceased was an ex-serviceman and had been gassed and shell shocked while serving with Co. A, 122 MG Bn, in France. He had been melancholy and in poor health since his return and seemed unable to get any relief. He was 34 years of age at the time of his death. He had served as a railway mail clerk prior to the war. His friends were numbered by those who knew him.

The funeral was held from his home at Preston on Sunday, Nov. 15th, with services at the Congregational church. Members of Tompkins-Jenkins post of the American Legion of Preston attended in a body and also six of their number acted as pallbearers. Corp Elmer H. Brown post of Spragueville also had a presentation at the funeral. He leaves to mourn his mother, Mrs. W. J. Campbell and sister, Alta of Preston and a brother, V. G. of Clinton.
