Frances Kobat was born in Prague, Austro Hungary, March 25, 1821 and died at Baldwin, Iowa, May 14, 1900, at 10:30 p.m., aged 79 years, 1 month and 19 days. In the year 1840, she was married to Frank Butka in Bohemia, and they in their early life immigrated to the United States, landing in New York City and staying a few years and then turning their faces westward, came to Iowa in 1854, locating in Maquoketa, where they lived a number of years, afterward locating near Baldwin, Iowa. Mr. Butka died about thirty years ago and for the last twenty-one years had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. John Gollobith, of Baldwin. Mrs. Butka was a believer in the Catholic faith and was a regular communicant from early childhood, and always in attendance at the services until she became an invalid with tumors of the stomach.

She was the mother of eight children-five of whom, with a number of grandchildren, survive her. Those of her children who mourn the loss of their mother are, Mrs. Jno Gollobith of Baldwin, Iowa, Mrs. B. Womnacke, of Oxford, Iowa, Frank Butka of Gross, Neb., James of Enid, Oklahoma, and Henry of Maquoketa.

Regular mass was held for Mrs. Butka under the conductorship of Father Nolan of Oxford at the Catholic church at Baldwin, Wednesday May 16, 1900 at 10 a.m., and burial at the Catholic cemetery in Baldwin.
