The Excelsior Newspaper, Maquoketa, Iowa, Friday. May 12, 1905

Died Sunday at 2 o'clock a.m. after a brief illness, D.C. Clary breathed his last, surrounded by all the members of his family. For 58 years Mr. Clary had been closely connected with the city of Maquoketa and had much to do with it's development and growth. He was a good citizen. He was born at Georgia, Vermont, in January 1821 and was married, at Swanton, Vermont, to Jane Ballard April 12, 1845. Two years later they came to Iowa and settled at Wright's Corners, two and one half miles south of town, where they resided for eight years, when they came to the then embryo village of Mquoketa. He engaged in the business of manufacturing wagons on a large scale for those days, and was very successful. Previous to this, however, in 1850, he and his wife made the trip to California via the isthmus (of Panama) and his quest for gold was not fruitless. Mr. Clary sold a half interest in his shops to Wilson Barnes in 1867, and the following year Mr. Barnes acquired the other half. Since that time Mr. Clary had lived a retired life. He was a great traveler and made many trips to California and we believe, has traveled in every state and territory of the union; also in Central America, Canada, etc. He seldom forgot anything he ever saw and years after could give minute descriptions of places and events.

He is survived by the aged wife, who for more than sixty years has been his companion and three children; Fred of Hartford, Conn., Mrs. George Cravens of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Lucy Van Evers, who made her home with her parents.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Dana were held at the late home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the remains were laid to rest in Mt. Hope.
