Arlene E. Engel, 79, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 19, 2013, at her home in rural Maquoketa, Iowa.

A celebration of Arlene's life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 P.M. on Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Arlene Edna Grosskruger was born on July 23, 1934 near Preston, Iowa, to John Louis and Agnes Irene (Kruse) Grosskruger. She grew up in Preston and was a 1953 graduate of Preston High School. After graduation, she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Maquoketa as an operator and secretary until she met the love of her life, J.C. Engel of Maquoketa. They were married on September 23, 1962 in Spragueville, Iowa and to this union three sons were born, Dean, Lynn and Neal.

Arlene and her husband, J.C., had farmed together in the rural Maquoketa area from 1962 to retirement. She worked in partnership in the daily farming activities and handled all of their bookkeeping duties.

Arlene was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Jackson County Farm Bureau, Maquoketa Township Homemakers, and the Jackson County Historical Society. She served as election chairperson and local election official for many years.

Arlene loved flower gardening, cooking, daily farm activities, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was generous with her time and talents, and enjoyed volunteering at the Jackson County Historical Society.

Those left to honor Arlene's memory include her husband, J.C. Engel of Maquoketa, IA; sons, Dean (Jenny) Engel of Delmar, IA, Lynn (Christine) Engel of Marion, IA, and Neal Engel of Maquoketa, IA; 5 grandchildren, Beth, Megan, Lexi, Lily, and Lex; a brother, Herman (JoAnn) Grosskruger of Andrew, IA; and a sister, Norma (Dale) Schmidt of Baldwin, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Grosskruger, Jr.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Jackson County Historical Society, Little Bear Park Building Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice.
