Jackson Sentinel, July 12, 1921

The remains of Ravmond Markus arrived on the narrow gauge railway Friday morning at our depot, last Friday where many relatives and friends had gathered to receive the remains of one who had given his young life for his country. Our ex-service men in uniform, carrying flags, were on hand to meet their fallen comrade. From the depot the deceased was escorted to the Hager undertaking establishment, where the casket was opened by M. L. Hager the undertaker. After the remains had been viewed by many they were taken to the home of his sister, Mrs, J. C. Nemmers. Mr. Markus was shot twice in a battle on the way to Metz, the last bullet entering one of his eyes, which killel him instantly. His father, Wm. Markus, had two permits which allowed them to open the casket in the undertaking rooms. The young man was a Lamotte boy and a graduate of our Holy Rosary high school. He was born here June 11. 1895, and was called upon for service in the great war May 10, 1918. For a short time he was in the Jefferson barracks and from there was transferred to Camp McArthur, Waco, Tex., and sailed for France August 2, I918. He was a member of Company G, 56th regiment of the Iowa Infantry and was killed Nov. 1, 1918. The mother and one sister preceded him many years ago. There remain to mourn the youth's loss his father and stepmother and his sister, Mrs. J. C. Nemmers, besides several aunts and uncles. Saturday morning at nine o'clock our ex-service men were on in uniform to attend the services and interment of their beloved comrade. At nine o'clock a solemn requiem took place in the Holy Rosary church with Rev. Father Friedman celebrant, Rev. Father Craney of Maquoketa deacon, and Rev. Vallaster of St. Donatus sub-deacon. After the requiem Rev. Friedman delivered a forcible sermon. The Legion boys had charge of the casket.
