Charles Rich, Jr.
Grand Forks residents were shocked yesterday by the news from Maquoketa, Iowa, that Charles Rich, manager of the Grand Forks office of the Western Union, had committed suicide in Mt. Hope cemetery.
The deceased was one of the best telegraph operators Grand Forks has ever had. He was employed for years on brokers' and press wires, which required a high standard of efficiency. He conducted a commission house here for some years and for a while was engaged in real estate business. Two years ago he succeeded Arthur C. Hanson as manager of the Western Union. He had been a resident of Grand Forks for about six years.
The deceased is survived by a daughter, age six years, who has been making her home here with him; his sister, Mrs. Harrington and his brother, George Rich. They left for Maquoketa to attend the funeral. The deceased will be laid to rest by the side of his father.
The revolver with which he killed himself was one he purchased in Grand Forks. He kept it in his desk and carried it with him when he left for Iowa Friday night.
