SARAH WOOD NICKERSON, EARLY PIONEER, CALLED BY DEATH

In the passing of Mrs. Sarah Wood Nickerson, Maquoketa is robbed of another of her pioneer women and highly respected residents. Mrs. Nickerson passed away at 12:20 Thursday morning. She had been bedfast for many weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Keck.

Sarah Sophia Wood was born in Ticonderoga, New York, July 15, 1838. She was but a young woman when she came to Iowa. She was married to T. K. Nickerson, who passed away twenty-two years ago. The Nickersons were among Maquoketa's early settlers. Mr. Nickerson owned large tracts of land on the upper Maquoketa River, including the present grounds known as Pinhook.

The Nickersons were liberal contributors to every worthy cause and were at the head of every civic improvement. Mrs. Nickerson was a member of the W. C. T. U. and a faithful member of the Congregational Church. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. O. C. Hunter of Charles City; G. C. Nickerson of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Frank Keck of Maquoketa; Mrs. Ed Glaser of Tobar, Nevada; Mrs. L. B. Carson of Maquoketa and Roy A. of Williams, Arizona. Mrs. Nickerson is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Dan Wilcox of Sac City. Funeral service will be held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Keck Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Dr. J. G. Morgan officiating. Interment will be made in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
