Maquoketa Excelsior, June 14, 1895-

Frank Beaver, the fourteen year old son of Daniel Beaver, of this city, while bathing in the Maquoketa River, last Sunday afternoon, got into deep water, and not being able to swim, was drowned. A small boy who was with him, but not in the water, ran home and told Mr. Beaver what happened. The body was recovered about six o'clock, having been in the water about two hours. The companion, a son of Silas Brown, was badly rattled and frightened, otherwise he would have given an alarm to some men and boys who were bathing within a stone's throw of the scene of the drowning and young Beaver would undoubtedly have been saved. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Boomershine officiating, and were largely attended. His sad fate should be a warning to boys who cannot swim not to go into of near deep water unattended.
