Carl V. Norpel, 85, of Mount Carroll passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Edgewater Care Center in Kerrville, Texas.

Carl was born June 7, 1924, in Bellevue, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Letty (Lundin) Norpel.

He served in the United States Navy as a Seabee during World War II. After the war, Carl entered New Mellery Abbey, where he served as a Brother for nearly 15 years. On June 26, 1968, Carl married Betty Beyers.

During the 1970's Carl and Betty operated Norpel Shoe Store. After Betty passed away on July 15, 1990, Carl married Eleanor Pessman on Oct. 11, 1991, in Mount Carroll. Carl and Eleanor enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and traveling. Eleanor passed away on Jan. 12, 2004.

He worked as a Cargill Sales Representative. Carl was a member of SS John and Catherine Catholic Church. He enjoyed bike riding, walking, collecting Lionel Trains and spending time with his family.

Carl is survived by two sisters, Alice Vick and Janet (John) McLean, both of Houston, Texas; four stepdaughters, Marcia (Curt) Merchant of Lanark, Audrey Smith of Freeport, Pam (Jack) Berg of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Diana Mis of Caro, Mich.; several stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Beyers Norpel and his wife, Eleanor Pessman Norpel; a sister, Arleen Norpel; and a brother, Kenneth Norpel.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the SS John and Catherine Catholic Church in Mount Carroll with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at SS John and Catherine Catholic Church.
