Obituaries 1918
Maquoketa Excelsior RecordThe Robert Bock family again have the sympathy of their friends in their double bereavement, the death of their second daughter, [Mary Bock] who passed away last Friday in a Davenport hospital. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Merle Calkins and two children. Her sister, Mrs. Jepsen passed away last week. Both died of pneumonia. These ladies are sisters of Mike Bock, who resides near here and nieces of Messrs. Jake and Mike Demmers.
The same circumstance happened in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin former residents of Otter Creek, but for a number of years residents of Shenandoah, Iowa. On Monday Nov. 26 their daughter, Miss Mae Martin passed away after a weeks illness of pneumonia and on Saturday of the same week their second daughter, Mrs. Maggie Bradley passed away of the same disease. Thus this poor father and mother were robbed of their only daughters inside of one week. The girls are nieces of Daniel and Will Martin and Mrs. C.G. Watters and Mrs. Maria Beck, all of Otter Creek. - 15 Nov 1918, Maquoketa Excelsior Record, Maquoketa, Iowa.
[All four of these women were probably victims of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic.]
