OBITUARY

William Wilcox was born October 7, 1823, in Elgin County, Ontario, and died at his home in Baldwin, Iowa, May 10, 1889. In the summer of 1840 he emigrated to Jackson County and since has lived in or near Mill Rock. During ten years of this time he was engaged in the mercantile business in Mill Rock and was the postmaster for some time. He was a man well adapted to the opening of a new country, because he knew what was work and could not content himself unless it with all his might. As long as he could get around it was useless to prevail upon him to cease labor. A few months ago he moved from Mill Rock to Baldwin, but it did not make him cease the work for he went back often to spend the day in hard labor. He was a man of whom could be said by those who lived by him “there could not be a better neighbor.” He was always careful of what he said; slow to say anything was thus or thus unless he knew it. In habits, sometimes odd, but very conscientious. As a member of the Good Templars Lodge of Baldwin, he was a hard worker, desiring that his town should be cursed no longer with liquor traffic. Since September 8, 1846, he lived in wedded life with the one who now mourns his loss, the two children are near the old home, the daughter living with her mother, Dr. Wilcox, in Baldwin. Mr. Wilcox leaves one brother in Louisiana, one in Oregon and one in Maquoketa, also one sister in Ontario. During his last sickness he suffered very much, death closing it all. At 10:00 on May 19th the funeral services were held in the M. E. Church of Baldwin, Rev. J. R. A. Hanner, the pastor, preaching the sermon. The Church was more than crowded thus showing something of the esteem in which he was held by those who had known him so long. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot ath the Buckhorn Cemetery. The Good Templars Lodge took part in the services at the grave.
