Viola K. Meier

Thursday, July 3, 2002

BELLEVUE, Iowa - Viola Katherine Meier, 102, of Bellevue, died Tuesday morning, July 1, 2003, at the Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Kingery Funeral Home, Bellevue, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1900, in Jackson County, daughter of Ludwig and Johanna (Fritz) Meier. She was the youngest of seven children, three boys and four girls. Her parents were of German and Luxembourg descent.

She lived on a farm one mile east of Springbrook, and then in Bellevue. She attended rural school of Jackson County, St. Joseph Grade School, St. Joseph High School and graduated from Bellevue Public High School in May 1917.

She also attended State Teachers College during 1917, and began teaching in the rural schools of Jackson County in 1918. Her last years teaching were spent in the third grade at St. Joseph School, Bellevue. Viola taught three generations of students. She retired from teaching in February 1972, after having taught for more than 50 years.

She also substituted for many years after and had a principal's teaching certificate. Teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, kindergarten through 8th grades was very memorable for her. She also was busy keeping the wood stove fired up throughout the cold winter months.

Writing, reading, poetry, crocheting, tat lace, sewing and teaching were her hobbies. She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, and its rosary society.

Viola was never married, nor had children, but was deeply devoted to four generations of many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, a Viola K. Meier Memorial Fund has been established.
