L.W. Garretson of Fulton Answers Final Summons. Lewis William Garretson, son of Rev. I.P. and Sophia Garretson, was born April 14, 1849 in Monroe county, Ohio. He came to Iowa in 1856 and located near Fulton, Jackson county. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Henrietta Simons, Oct. 17, 1872. This union was blessed with two sons, William H., of Ames, and John of Bridgeport, and two daughters, Mrs. Edna Robbins and Mrs. Emma Campbell of Maquoketa.
Mr. Garretson was a great lover of home and was away only when duty or business called him. He loved to have his grandchildren home which wish they gratified as far as they were able. A good citizen and neighbor and the better you knew him and the more dealings you had with him the better you liked him. His children will rise up and call him blessed. He was a noble, devoted husband and father and will be most missed in the home.
He was in his usual health until Saturday, Aug. 13, when he was taken suddenly ill which developed into pneumonia and all that medical skill and loving care could to was of no avail and he passed away at his home two miles north of Fulton, on Monday, Aug. 22nd, at the mature age of 72 years, 4 months, and 8 days.
Besides the sorrowing and bereft wife and children, four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Simons of Fulton and a large circle of relatives and friends survive, who will miss his genial presence. He has gone to his eternal rest and his works will follow him.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Prayer at the home at 1:30 p.m. and sermon at the M.E. church at Fulton at 2 p.m., where a large number of friends gathered to show sympathy to the living and pay last earthly tribute to the departed. The floral offerings of family and friends were beautiful. Burial was made in the Esgate cemetery. Rev. D.F. Boomershine, officiating.
