Funeral Services Held Monday At Garryowen for Mrs. Nancy Bovee
Fulton – Special – Nancy Helen Bovee, daughter of the late Richard and Patience Riley, was born near Dubuque, Jan. 30, 1851, and passed away at the City Memorial hospital in Maquoketa, Jan. 1, 1937, at the advanced age of 85 years, 6 months and 2 days.
Several weeks previous, she suffered a fall that resulted in a broken hip which necessitated her being taken to the hospital. Later, pneumonia developed and in spite of the best of medical aid, she passed away New Years day at 4:30 p.m.
She was united in marriage to Geo. R. Hopson, Jan. 3, 1868 at Fountain Green, Ill. To this union was born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. Survivors are: William R. of Presho, S.D.: John H. and George F. of near Fulton. Her husband preceded her in death in the year 188[?] at New Albin, Iowa, and her only daughter, Mrs. Emma Brott, passed away at Ortenville[sic], Minn., April 18, 1934. A son, James, also preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1929.
In December 1889, she was united in marriage to Edwin O. Bovee at Fedora, S.D. He passed away in 1914. Since that time, she had made her home with her son, William, at Presho, S.D., but spent the last five years with her son, George, near Fulton. Besides the remaining sons, she leaves 27 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
As a true pioneer, she had experienced the hardships and trouble of early life in this section in the same spirit of fortitude and humility that characterized her all thru[sic] life and especially during her last illness. [Rest is very faded and difficult to read] Unselfish, she [was] never known to command but maintained an unswerving devotion to duty, [friendship] and to her religion. Next [to her] religious dev[otions?], she held [the companionship] and loyalty of [her friends] in the highest regard.
