26 Sep 1885, Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, IA.

DIED - Lafayette - Near Slabtown, Washington township, this county, on September 16th, 1885, of consumption, Mrs. Laura M. Lafayette, aged 25 years, 5 months and three days.

Laura was the oldest daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Ebon Damon, grand-daughter of Mrs. & Mrs. Wm. Hfious[sic], and wife of James Lafayette, Jr.

Although she was a sufferer with that dread disease, consumption, for almost five months, she was called away in the bloom of life, when visions of happiness threw their enchantment along the vista of her future years. But she is gone! She has left us like the bird which carolled in the morn and and departed upon the sun's slanting rays. But her virtues survive in a brighter sphere; her name is stamped with immortality; her hand strikes a harp that will pour its melodies forth when the groves and streams of earth are silent. - H.
