AN OLD VETERAN PASSES AWAY
James Carter Answers Taps Late Friday Night At Home On South Second Street
James Carter, a Civil War veteran and a resident of this city for many years, passed away Friday evening at ten o’clock at his home on South Second Street. Mr. Carter had not enjoyed good health for many months and had been confined to his home for several weeks.
He was born in Clermont, Ohio, on February 4, 1840, and spent his early life in Ohio, acquiring his education there. He left Ohio and went to Indiana where he spent one year and followed his trade, that of saddletree maker. In the year 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss Cynthia West and located in Maquoketa, where they made their home. Mrs. Carter preceded her husband to the grave just two years, having passed away on October 1, 1916.
Mr. Carter served as drummer during the period of the Civil War being a member of Company I, 22nd Ohio Volunteers. He was a good neighbor, a true friend and a kind father. As a loyal citizen, Mr. Carter was ever ready to serve his country at any call.
Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Carter, Georgia Anne, Edith, Lute and Phillip, who are deceased and Caroline, Anna and Claire, who survive. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at two o’clock from the home, Rev. C. C. Markham will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
