PRESTON, Iowa -- Arion James Potter, of rural Preston, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center West in Davenport, from complications of an 18-year battle with prostate cancer. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Preston. Father Donald Plamondon will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Preston with full military honors accorded by the Tompkins-Jenkins American Legion Post No. 602 of Preston. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a parish Scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston is in charge of the arrangements. Arion was born August 3, 1921, in rural Bellevue, the son of Elbridge Gerry and Rosamand (Garvin) Potter. He graduated from Virden Community High School in Virden, Illinois, with the Class of 1939. Arion was also a graduate of the University of Illinois. He married Louise Mary Mignone on February 18, 1950, at St. Anthony's Parish in Spring Valley, Illinois. Arion was a dairy farmer in rural Preston for many years. He won many awards for his herd and milk production during his career. Arion served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Preston, Preston Knights of Columbus Council No. 11222 and Clinton County Farm Bureau and a life member of Tompkins-Jenkins American Legion Post No. 602 in Preston. Arion was a former member of the Dubuque Archdiocesan Board and a nine-year member of the Clinton/Jackson County Dairy Herd Improvement Association Board. He was active in Christian Experience Weekends at St. Joseph Sugar Creek Parish. Arion was a wonderful father and provider for his family. His favorite pastime was to go fishing. Survivors include his wife, Louise; seven sons, David (Cynthia) Potter, of Hanover Park, Ill., Steve (Terri) Potter, of Preston, Mark (Donna) Potter, of Clinton, Jim Potter, of Dubuque, Edward Potter, of Fulton, Ill., Randy Potter, of Cedar Rapids, and Tom (Robin) Potter, of Wheatland; three daughters, Mary (Frank) White, of Carbondale, Colo., Cathy (Jake) Pruett, of San Francisco, Calif., and Betty (Bruce) Collins, of Rifle, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Roseann Parker, of Moline, and Mary (Dr. Myke) Myklebust, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and a brother, Gerry (Mary Ann) Potter, of Sebastian, Fla. Arion was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Gerry, in 1996 and a brother, Richard.
