Wm. H. Barker Killed at DeWitt.

A sad and fatal accident occurred at DeWitt Monday night that cast a gloom over or city. William H. Barker, a young man about 26 years of age who employed as night operator at the C. & N. W. Ry. Deport at DeWitt, was killed by the cars. He was assisting a traveling man across the tracks to take the midnight flyer west and when on the track the traveling man slipped and in assisting him both were caught by the engine. Mr. Barker met instant death, his body being cut in two. The traveling man lost both legs and was taken to the hospital at Clinton where he died later. Mr. Barker was a resident of our city, a member of the Maquoketa Tribe, No. 78, I.O.R.M, and an exemplary young man of good habits. His untimely death will be mourned by a host of friends. The blow will fall most severely upon his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Barker, who have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. The body was brought to this city Tuesday afternoon and the funeral will be held Thursday afternoon.
