“Died. SQUIRES - At the home of her parents in this city Thursday evening March 22, 1888, of diphtheria, Miss Hattie, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Squires aged 15 yrs. 11 mos. 21 days.
"Deceased was taken ill Sunday evening and her sickness soon developed as a case of the most malignant form of diphtheria. Notwithstanding the strenuous efforts of the family and physicians Hattie grew worse rapidly until the hour of her death about 5 o'clock Thursday evening. She was a bright and lovely young lady of many good qualities and verging on womanhood she looked forward with great hope and anticipation of happy days to come, but how sudden and unexpected the angel of death can sweep away all human hopes, is here exemplified. The suddenness of the death was a shock to the parents and a sympathizing community and particularly Hattie’s young friends. The funeral occurred Friday afternoon from the house Rev. Langridge officiating and a quartette of voices furnishing the music. The attendance was necessarily small by reason of the State Board of Health regulations. The parents and an uncle and aunt from Center Junction were the only relatives present at the funeral, the two sons Harry and Will being too great a distance from home to be called and the two sisters being confined to their rooms with sickness. Under these sad circumstances the funeral was made doubly sorrowful.
[same page under Daily Jottings] - “The community were surprised to hear of the death of Miss Hattie Squires this evening, of diphtheria after a brief illness of four days. - 29 Mar 1888, Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, pg 1.
