Maquoketa Excelsior
February 2, 1899

Another old citizen and good man departed this life Thursday night, when John Tridel breathed his last. Mr. Tridel had been very feeble for several years past and was gradually growing more so and was in no condition whatever to withstand an attack of the grip, which took him away. Mr. Tridel was close on to 88 years of age, having been born in Pennsylvania in 1811. When he first came west he settled in Illinois, but came from there to Maquoketa in 1868. He was an iron moulder by trade and upon coming here took up that business continuing it for many years. In 1837 he was married to Miss Nancy Elder and to them were born five children, all daughters, two of whom survive – Agnes Tridel of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Susan Lyness of this city. Mrs. Tridel died in 1872. The late Mrs. E. M. Ballengee was also a daughter of deceased and he made his home with her up to the time of her death a few months ago, when he continued to live with Mr. Ballengee and daughter. The funeral was held from the house this afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. Shepherd officiating.
