Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, October 5, 1893.

Bert Jenkins-

Yesterday morning in charge of a committee consisting of Joseph Johnson and P. F. Johnson, of the brakeman’s brotherhood at Council Bluffs, the remains of Bert Jenkins arrived here. It will be remembered that he met death in the collision between a special freight and a pile driver train Wednesday noon.

The remains on arrival here were received by Jesse French and Harry McKenze, roommates of Jenkins, who went on to Maquoketa. Later at 1:10 p.m. Supt. Rizer furnished a special train, and on this 31 members of the Hand in Hand Lodge of Clinton, also from Mississippi Valley Lodge, from Heart in Hand Lodge of Fulton, and a representative of B. of L. E., the B. of L. F. and the O. R. C., all went to Maquoketa and there assisted in the simple, yet solemn ceremonies with which the remains of the late lamented were consigned to the earth.

The Hand in Hand Lodge extend to Supt. Rizer, for granting the train and to the train crew composed of Engineer Jas. Campbell, Fireman J. R. Atkins, Conductor H. H. Atkins and Brakeman Fred Herrick and Robert Emmons for their gratuitous services, the sincere thanks of the lodge and all so deeply concerned. –Lyons Advertiser, Sept 30th

As above narrated, the remains were brought to our city and conveyed to Union church cemetery for internment, Rev. T. S. Porter, officiating. Beside the numerous distant relatives and friends there were present a sister of the deceased, Miss Leona Jenkins, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Jenkins. The deceased was a congenial young man who had many friends among his acquaintances.
