Maquoketa Excelsior, Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, January 26, 1899.

OBITUARY-

JOHN WILCOX was born in Montgomery County, New York, April 26, 1808. At the age of 18 years he moved to Canada where he was married to Mariah Caswell of Clinton County, New York, on January 4, 1835. In 1840 John Wilcox and his wife moved to Iowa making the journey by wagon. They settled on a farm near Buckhorn where they resided until the year 1882, when they removed to Maquoketa, in which city they made their home until the death of Mrs. Wilcox on March 7, 1892. Since that sad loss Mr. Wilcox has made his home with his two married daughters, Sarah Moulton and Mary Franks, and it was at the home of the latter that he quietly passed away on Sunday morning, January 22, 1899, aged 90 years, 8 months and 27 days, his death resulting from the natural causes incidental to his great age. In his early life he was baptized into the fellowship of a Baptist church. He was one of the earliest members of the church of Maquoketa.

John Wilcox’s home was a happy one during the seven years over a half a century of years his wife was spared to be at his side. There were born into that home eight children, five sons and three daughters. Of these six survive their father, as follows: Sarah Moulton, Benjamin Hudson Wilcox, Mary Franks, Ferdinand Wilcox, Columbus Wilcox and Norah Delano.

The days of our years are said to be three score and ten, by reason of strength they are sometimes declared to be four score years, but John Wilcox had passed even the last number by over ten more, and even until the last few weeks his eyes were not dim nor his natural force abated. His memory will be cherished and honored by all who knew him. By the children who have lost their father, and the children’s children who have lost their grandfather. By the pioneers with whom he overcame the difficulties of pathfinding and homemaking and soil conquering back in the 1840’s and the 1850’s; and by the friends and neighbors who appreciate his true worth and esteemed him as a good man, full of faith and of good deeds which he did.

The funeral was held at Buckhorn church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 24th, Rev. Henry Clark of the Baptist church, this city, officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery nearby.
