February 23, 1893One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our midst for some time was that of Sylvia M. Pepper who died Saturday morning, Feb. 18 at 8 o’clock of fatty degeneration of the heart. Mrs. Pepper was born at Rock Port, the exact date of her birth being unobtainable, nearly 55 years ago. She came to Iowa City while quite young, there being only six log cabins here at that time. She came to Baldwin several years ago and was engaged in teaching school in this vicinity. She was married to Edward Baldwin and lived happy until his death about 18 months thereafter. In 1887 she was again married to Walter W. Pepper with whom she lived very happily until his sudden departure about a year ago. Mrs. Pepper was a woman of intelligence, an excellent scholar and a graduate of our State University, she had an exemplary Christian character and her faith in her God was strong. The past year her physical suffering and mental anxiety were almost unbearable, such as rarely falls to the lot of women. The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon at her residence Rev. Bretnal officiating, although her relatives were very few in attendance at the funeral, yet those who knew her were truly mourners for they had lost a true friend, a kind neighbor and one who was ready to do good. The remains were taken to Iowa City Monday morning for interment accompanied by her nephew, Charles Payne, he being the only relative at her side at time of death.
