HUNDREDS ATTEND C. L. ELY FUNERAL

Seventh District Bar Members Attend

Governor Herring Represented

No greater tribute could have been accorded to any citizen than is being tendered this Thursday afternoon to the late Judge C. L. Ely, whose funeral is being held from the home on East Platt Street. People from all classes from far and near have gathered to pay their respects to one who had not only endeared himself to his home city and community, but to the district and state.

Louis Roddewig, representing from Governor Herring, three justices of the supreme court, members of both houses of national congress, state legislators, prominent personages in the various departments of state government, every judge from this judicial district, and practically every member of the Seventh District Bar association have joined the countless throng of friends to honor the memory of “a man among men.”

Profusions of flowers tell their silent story; closed doors of business houses, offices and homes speak in indescribable terms of the sorrow which prevails everywhere. Sadness enshrouds the city which Mr. Ely loved and served so well, while hushed voices convey their hidden meaning.

With bitter reluctance we are, this afternoon, giving back to the Great Supreme Judge one whose loss is almost irreparable. Why the untimely calling is more than we can understand, but through the cloud we all recognize and are inspired by the thought that the life of Clarence L. Ely has brought honor to this city and state, and as we commit his soul to a great tribunal, we go on living, cherishing the memory of a friend who was truly great.
