Prominent Pastor Dead

Rev. M. J. Locke, pastor of the First M. E. church, Clinton, for the past three years, and one of the best known ministers in eastern Iowa, died Saturday afternoon at 4:15 o’clock at the Methodist hospital. He had been failing in health for some time before his death and the end was looked for by physicians attending him.

Rev. Locke was born in Baldwin, Jackson county, Iowa, June 15, 1868, and was a graduate of Cornell college and Garrett Biblical institute of Evanston, Ill. He held charges at Marion, Springville, Clarence, Tipton, Independence and Clinton.

The deceased was prominent in Masonry and took an active interest in the fraternity. He was a member of Clinton lodge and of Demolay Consistory Scottish Rite.

The funeral was held this morning at 10:30 o’clock with shipment of the body to Mt. Vernon for burial.

Rev. Locke was well known here and in this community and his many friends will learn of his death with sorrow.
