Another old settler of Jackson county, whose face has been sunshine in the neighborhood for many long years, has passed from life's duties well done to find sweet rest in the immortal fields of paradise. Death, the agent of peace and joy to the weary, purified spirits, is always a grief-bearing messenger to hearts bereft of one of life's brightest charms - a father's love and a father's counsel. After a long life has been truly lived, and its trials and obligations have all been firmly met and conquered with a resolute will and honest heart, still death's visits cause sorrow which only the alleviating influences of time and pity of the Merciful Father can assuage. Such was the life of Mr. E.Garland, whose spirit passed peacefully to rest Wednesday, the 29th of December A.D. 1887.

Mr. Garland was born in Maryland, Jan. 1st, 1814. When a boy of some 15 years he went to Boon Co., Ky.; was married to Eliza Horiel [Hoshall] on Dec. 18, 1835, and with his wife, came to Iowa and settled on his farm in April, 1842, where he continued to live until three years ago, then making his home with his son-in-law, Mr. Baldwin, where he died.
