May 24, 1890Obituary.
Wm. Hofius died May 14, 1890, at his home in Bridgeport, this county, of old age and general debility, aged 84 years and two months. Deceased was born in Mercer County, Pa., May 12, 1806. He came to Iowa in 1845, locating near old Springbrook, where he resided until after the death of his first wife, which occurred shortly after their arrival in Iowa. In July, 1851, he married Mrs. Mary Vaughn who survives him at the ripe old age of 76 years. Mr. Hofius was the father of ten children, six of whom are still living. He also had fifty-three grandchildren and nineteen great grand-children. He was a helpless invalid for 19 months and for the last few weeks was a terrible sufferer, but he bore his sufferings with Christian courage. His last moments were of sweet repose, and kind friends and neighbors were near to wipe the death damp from his aged brow and speak words of consolation. A sweet smile hovered about his lips as the angels wafted his spirit safely home. The remains were laid to rest in the Bridgeport cemetery. The funeral services were largely attended and were conducted by Rev. J. G. Van Ness, of Maquoketa.
