PETER McANINCH OBITUARY from the Hawarden, Iowa, newspaper, probably the Hawarden "Independent;" the clipping does not include a date; however, Peter McAninch died in 1922. The article is headlined, "Aged Pioneer Mustered Out - Peter McAninch, 81, Answers Final Summons - Settled on Farm Northeast of Town Almost 37 years Ago - Served in Civil War Nearly 3 Years." Text of article follows:

"Peter McAninch, for almost 37 years a resident of this vicinity, dropped dead very suddenly Saturday morning. His death came as a distinct shock to everybody, as he had been in good health in spite of his advanced age, and had planned to make a trip to the home of one of his sisters for a visit. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the house at 2 o'clock and from the Baptist Temple at 2:30, conducted by Rev. J.T. Parker, the pastor. Members of Two Oakes Post of the American Legion acted as pall bearers. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

"Peter McAninch was born Jan. 25, 1841, near Pittsburg, Pa., and died in Hawarden June 10, 1922, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 15 days. During the days of the Civil War he heard his country's call and enlisted in Co. I of the 31st Iowa Infantry, serving 2 years and 11 months in the war. On the 2nd day of March, 1869, Mr. McAninch and Miss Eliza Curey were united in marriage. One son, Sherman, was born to them. Mr. McAninch moved to Jackson County, Iowa, about fifty years ago and from there to Hardin county, where he lived for five years. He was united in marriage secondly with Miss Rosa Hills on July 30, 1871, and to them were born four children, Harvey, Vinetti [Sic.; Vinetta], James Henry and Alice. He came to Sioux county with his family Oct. 1, 1885, living on a farm five miles northeast of Hawarden until three years ago when he purchased a home in Hawarden and moved to town with his wife. The deceased continued to reside here until his death. His wife passed away Jan. 6, 1921, after a brief illness.

"For 45 years the deceased had been a member of the Baptist church, uniting in Jackson county. He and his wife united with the Hawarden Baptist church May 13, 1894. In the community, church and home he has lived a consistent Christian life. Peter McAninch was one of the most respected and best loved men in the community, and deepest mourning is felt now that another pioneer and soldier of the Civil War has been "mustered out."

"He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Sherman, Harve [Sic., Harvey] and J. H. McAninch, and Mrs. R.W. [Vinetta] Younie and Mrs. Elmer [Alice] Abbey. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. James Little [Mary Jane] and Mrs. Joe Liston of Radcliffe, Iowa, and Mrs. Orville Current [Nancy] of Baldwin, Iowa, one brother, Geo. McAninch of Hawarden, and twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren."
