Smith - Isaac Smith of Bloomfield township, Clinton Co., was born in Ticonderoga, Essex Co., New York, March 9 and died Tuesday morning, April 1st, AD 1890, being 75 years and 22 days old.
He was married Sept. 9th 1841, to Miss Caroline Potter, a native of Vermont, with whom he lived and shared his lot to the day of his death. Six children have shared the blessings of their home, three of whom have passed from the stage of action, while three remain to mourn his departure.
He was of good stock. His grandparents on both sides fought with the American forces at Bunker Hill for our American independence, two uncles were in the war of 1812 for a like cause of maintaining the same, and a brother was found in the late war for his country’s good.
In politics he was a republican of the old time Whig stock. In religion, he was a Christian, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Elwood, where he has held the office of steward, class leader, and Sunday school superintendent. He was impressed for such a life in 1853, entered upon it in 1858; since which time he has been an acceptable member and representative. He often spoke of the happy relation that existed between his family, his neighbors and himself.
He came to Iowa in Jackson County in 1852 where he remained nearly 3 years, when they moved to their present home in Bloomfield twp, Clinton Co. The obsequies occurred on Thursday the 3rd at 11 a.m., at the house, from thence to the Union Church, where Rev. R. A. Miller, Pasteur of the deceased preached the sermon from the 37th psalm and part of the 37th verse. “The end of that man is peace.” Notwithstanding the inclement weather a very large congregation came to his burial.
