A COLORADO SNOW SLIDE

Joe Raymond, Jr., a Maquoketa man, and six others killed.

Mr. Joseph Raymond, Sr., of this city, received the startling news last Wednesday of the death of the eldest son, by a terrible snow slide, near the coal mines of Crested Butte, Colorado, where the son was employed as a miner.

Joe Raymond, Jr., was born in Troy, New York, in 1847 (1844), and came with his parents to Maquoketa at an early day. During his parents’ residence here he has been home but little of the time since passing the age of 18. (Joseph served in Company H, 6th Iowa Cavalry, Civil War; enlisted March 13, 1863, age 19; mustered out October 17, 1865, at Sioux City, Iowa)

For many years he has been “roughing it” on the mountains, but was home a year ago last winter and made a several months visit here. He was unmarried. His remains were ordered sent to this city for interment in Mount Hope Cemetery (Lot 8-532) by the side of a sister of deceased, who met a most tragic death on the old fairgrounds in Maquoketa about sixteen years ago when Nell Rhodes’ spirited team of stallions got beyond his control and caused such sad havoc, plunging wildly through a crowd of five thousand people, injuring several and tramping to death Miss Raymond, who was but a school girl at the time.
