Obituary

Mrs. William Halley passed away Friday morning, July 26, at 4:10 o’clock at her home in Nashville, Ia., aged 83 years, 6 months and 12 days.

Mrs. Halley, whose maiden name was Catherine Nodle, was the daughter of Henry and Mary Nodle, and was born on January 14, 1835, at Portage county, Ohio, where she grew to a beautiful young womanhood.

She came to Iowa with her parents in the year 1853 and in 1858, at Maquoketa, was united in marriage to William Halley, who survives. For 25 years they resided in the vicinity of Maquoketa and Nashville, where they lived on a farm; later moved to a farm at Manning, Iowa, and from there went to Geddes, S. Dakota., and still later to Quin, So. Dak. On account of Mrs. Halley’s failing health, she with her husband came to Nashville two years ago last January.

Besides the grief-stricken husband, four sons, survive: W. F. of Geddes, So. Dak.; J. R. of Nashville, Ia.; C. H. of Geddes, S. Dak., and J. A., who made his home with his parents, and devoted his entire life to them, and made every sacrifice for their comfort. Also six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Ommen of Guthrie Center, Ia.; Mrs. Sarah Messerly of the state of Oregon, and Mrs. Almeda Dell of Maquoketa; three brothers, Abraham, Lewis and Jacob Nodle, all of Payette, Idaho, survive. Two sisters, Mrs. Hettie Dodd and Mrs. Susan Goddard and one brother, John, preceded her in death.

Many friends and acquaintances regret her passing, as she was loved by all who knew her and those who knew her most loved her best. A neighbor said: “I never all the time she lived here heard anyone speak an ill word of her.”

The aged husband and the children wish to thank those who so kindly assisted them during the illness and death of this precious wife and mother and also to express their appreciation of the beautiful floral offerings.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Nashville church, Rev. Dawson of Monmouth officiating. Interment was made in the Buckhorn cemetery.
