August 6, 1918Hubert Blaney of Olin Gives His Life for Great Cause
Word was received by Mrs. E. W. Westphal of Delmar from the war department through her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Blaney of Olin, advising her that her brother, Hubert Blaney, had given his life for his country in France. Some time ago word was received that he had been wounded in action on June 18, and relatives had been anxiously awaiting further news as to his condition, trusting that his injuries were not as serious as feared. The sad news came Monday, however, stating that the young hero had died on July 1st, his death being due to shell shock. Hubert was a member of the famous Rainbow Division which has covered itself with glory during their service across seas, he with nineteen other lads from Olin enlisting the day after America had declared war with Germany. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Blaney of Olin, a splendid young man, and whose death will be mourned by every person in his home community, and whose memory will be honored by a grateful nation.
