August 2, 1918Charlotte Boy is Drowned Near Sabula
The second drowning which has occurred at Sabula in the past two weeks occurred last Monday evening about five o’clock when Robert, the fourteen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Bender of Charlotte lost his life while bathing in the Mississippi river just opposite the Sabula sand and gravel pit at Sabula. It seems that Robert and his brother Charles, who is two years older, arrived at Sabula in the morning to make a visit at the Al Swift home, and in the latter part of the afternoon the boys in company with a lad from Clinton when to the river to bathe. Robert in wading out too far, stepped off the sand bar into the deep water, and being unable to swim, was drowned, the swift current preventing the two other boys from rescuing him.
