Crushed to Death by a Load of Wood.

John Jindra, a Bohemian, met with a terrible death in the timber about four miles north of our city last Thursday afternoon. He was a farm hand in the employ of C. C. Lyons, and on the day mentioned was hauling logs for Mr. Lyons. In descending a hill a heavy load of logs on the sleigh were capsized on the man who was walking beside the load and he was horribly crushed and killed almost instantly. His neck was broken and his entrails protruded. Mr. Lyons had warned him to keep away from the lower side of the load, but he took the risk and lost his life. The young man was 22 years of age and came from Bohemia to America about two years since, first stopping in New York and walking thence all the way to Maquoketa. He worked for Frank Smola last summer and was an industrious hand. His funeral occurred last Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. His remains were interred in Mt. Hope cemetery. The mother and sister of the unfortunate young man expected to come here next spring and settle, but their happy anticipation will be turned to sorrow when they learn of their son's untimely death. The father of the young man has been here some little time.
