Obituary

Mrs. Wilhelmena Herkelman.

Wilhelmena Koch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Koch, was born at Bruekefeldt, Germany on November 3, 1843, and died at her home at Elwood, on December 24, 1919, aged 76 years 1 month and 16 days.

On February 16, 1867, she was united in marriage to Mr. Henry Herkelman. They remained in Germany until 1881, when they moved to America, and at once to Elwood, where they have lived the most of the time since.

To Mr. and Mrs. Herkelman were born four children, three while yet in Germany, and one at Elwood. They are Ernest, Mrs. Ida House of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Anna Schoellermann of Toronto, Iowa, and Carl of Welton, Iowa. There are also of the immediate relatives, eight grand children and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Herkelman was confirmed and baptized into the Lutheran church of Germany and although she did not become a member of the church in America, she read the Bible regularly and encouraged her children to do the same. She is better known and appreciated among her German speaking friends because of the fact that she could speak English but slightly. This kept her from close acquaintances with many who would have become closer friends.

Funeral services were held from the home on Sunday afternoon, December 28, conducted by the Reverend J. J. Snyder. Hymns were sung by Madames Hill and Myatt and interment was made in the Elwood cemetery.

The family wish to add their thanks to their friends and neighbors for their sympathy and many acts of kindness in their misfortune.
