Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, Thursday, July 16, 1908
CAVEN.—Catherine Sinkey was born Dec. 26, 1860, in Brandon township, Jackson county, Iowa, and was reared on the farm in the family of Levi Wagoner, a brother of her mother and after a lingering illness, she was released from her suffering on Friday, July 10, aged 47 years, 6 months, and 14 days. She was united in marriage to Perry Caven, July 3rd, 1880, and she was the happy mother of eight children, all of whom were home and present at her bedside when she passed away, viz: Adelia, Charles, Mary, Auther, Florence, Daisy, Leonard and Sherman, besides three sisters and one brother, viz: Elizabeth Matheny of Davenport, Mary Richardson of Coggan, and Lydia Neagle of Jackson county, and Stephen Sinkey of Independence. In 1887 she became a member of the Presbyterian church at Emeline of which she was a faithful member until her decease, a noble example to her family. Mrs. Caven was an exemplary christian, a fond devoted wife and mother, so that it can be truly said of her, “Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her,” Funeral services were held from the home four miles northwest of Emeline on Saturday at 4 p. m. and sermon in Hickory Grove schoolhouse, where a large circle of friends gathered to pay last earthly tribute to the departed. The floral offering was quite expressive of the esteem of the friends. Burial in Hickory Grove cemetery, Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
