Preston Independent, Dec. 8.

DIED – At the home of Charles Wagner, Saturday, Dec. 1st, 1888, of apoplexy, Jonas Van Steinburg, aged 82 years and 9 months.

Deceased was born March 2nd, 1806. In Duchess county, N. Y. He was the last of a large family of children, most of whom lived to a ripe old age. He was the father of six children, all of whom survive him, and all were present at the funeral with the exception of the youngest son, Willard, who resides in Humboldt county, and was sick and unable to be present. Deceased buried his wife nearly three years ago and since then has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Wagner, where he was cared for during his illness. He lived three weeks after the call came, and slowly but surely was the summons responded to.

Mr. Vansteinburg moved to Jackson county; Iowa, in October, 1858, and had been a resident here for thirty years. He was a remarkable active for one of his years and was well known by the pioneers of this portion of the county. He said during his illness that he was anxiously waiting for the keel of life’s boat to strike the other shore.

An honorable upright man has gone to solve the great mystery. He was a man of spotless character and true integrity, and was held in the highest esteem by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. His past life is a record that is worthy of emulation.

Funeral services were held at the house where he died, being conducted by Rev. Pratt, the Universalist minister from Cedar Rapids.
