Henry Schocker Passes Away Early Wednesday Morning

Henry Schocker, a well known resident of Maquoketa for many years, died at his home on South Otto street last Wednesday morning at 5:30 o’clock. He had been failing in health for over a year past. On the 21st of August he submitted to an operation at the Memorial hospital. But his ailment proved beyond the reach of an operation and since that time he has been confined to his home, where he passed away.

Mr. Schocker was born, the second son of Henry W. and Sophia Meinke Schocker, on a farm in Fairfield township, Jackson county, Iowa, March 15, 1870. He grew up on the farm and has lived in Jackson county all his life with the exception of a year in Walla Walla, Washington, and three years in Lake Benton, Minnesota.

On December 28th, 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna R. Thill. To them one daughter was born, who survives. His wife passed away Feb. 2nd, 1909. On November 26th, 1914 he married to Mrs. Mary Niblock. For five years he lived on the home farm west of Maquoketa. Failing health caused him to move to town in 1919. And for nine years he has been associated with his brother. August L. Schocker, in business here. His age at his death was 58 years, 6 months and 4 days.

He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Miss Anna C. Schocker, a step son, Earl Niblock, two bothers, August L., and John Schocker, and two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Nieland and Mrs. Mary Loitz, all of whom reside in Maquoketa.

Mr. Schocker was a man of quiet and unassuming disposition. But a man of sterling character and business honesty. He was a member of the Reformed church and of the local lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. But he was especially attached to his home, where he found comfort and consolation during the days of his declining strength.

Funeral services will be held in the Methodist church this, Friday, afternoon, at 2:00 o’clock. Rev. A. W. Sinden, of the Congregational church, will have charge of the service.
