Remains of Mrs. Lydia Johnson Consigned to the Tomb

The funeral of Mrs. Lydia Johnson, whose death occurred last Tuesday evening at Marshalltown, and which was mentioned in our Friday’s issue, was held from the home of D. H. Anderson Friday afternoon, the P. E. O. Sisterhood assisted by Rev. J. G. Morgan conducting the last sad rites. For long years Mrs. Johnson had been prominent in church, fraternal and social circles of our city and in all activities pertaining to uplift and welfare development she might be found giving generously of her time, money and labor that advancement might be attained. A woman of noble character and high ideals, her citizenship among us has been worthy of the highest tribute and in her passing Maquoketa has lost one of her best women. An honored member of the O. E. S., the P. E. O. society and the Woman’s club, her counsels will be as keenly missed as her presence was formerly enjoyed.

Mrs. Lydia Ball Johnson was born in New York state and with her parents came to Illinois when a child of four years. In December, 1871, she was united in marriage to Dr. George O. Johnson, who preceded her in death several years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Mr. Roy Hurd of Marshalltown, and Maj. E. C. Johnson of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Mrs. Anna Crawford of Chicago and one brother who resides in the east, besides a number of other more distant relatives.
