Died.

Wright – June 24th, 1885, at his residence in Maquoketa, of obstruction of the bowels, John J. Wright, aged 65 years.

Mr. Wright was born in Charleston, N. H., in 1820. His father’s name was Samuel Wright, a distant relation of ex-Governor Silas Wright, of New York. In 1841, the deceased, John. J. married Miss Lovina Spalding, of East Washington, N. H., and the two moved to the State of New York, where in 1847 Mr. Wright was elected a justice of the peace. In 1840-50 he was elected a member of the Legislature – then called supervisor – on the Whig ticket.

Following this he met with several reverses, and after sojourning in Iowa twice he determined to make his home here in Maquoketa, then a wild prairie, and moved to this place in 1854. He was with Jonas Clark for about a year as clerk in his dry goods store. Giving up his position there he erected the brick residence now occupied and owned by Warren Clark, and at that time one of the finest houses in the town.

He enlisted in the army in 1861, and served fourteen months, until discharged on account of injuries received, which have clung to him, finally causing his death. The wound, Dr. Bowen, the attending physician, says was in the hips and so injured the internal parts as to create a redolent growth adjacent to the colon, rendering the control of that bowel very difficult. It was this which had shut off all passage from the bowels for about two weeks past, bringing intense suffering to the deceased, in fact it has been a source of great trouble and pain to him for years past.

Although Mr. Wright had his faults, he was widely known as a kind-hearted, peaceful man, and in his younger days, possessed of good business qualifications. During his sickness he manifested great patience and fortitude, never complaining, though he continually suffered great pain. He leaves a wife who has devotedly cared for him with a patience that is Christian life and noble.

The funeral occurred from his late residence on Matteson avenue, and was conducted by the Drips Post, G. A. R., of which the deceased was a member. Rev. Hough made a few brief remarks. The Timber City Band accompanied the remains to the cemetery.
