Dubuque Weekly Times, March 10, 1859:

CAPTAIN JOHN H. WEBER, a man about eighty years of age, committed suicide in Bellevue, Jackson County, on Monday of last week. The JOURNAL of that village says:- "Capt. Weber was an old settler. He came to Galena at an early day as U. S. Land Agent, and, we believe, has filled a number of important positions with ability and fidelity. He was, also, an Agent for the Hudson Bay Company, and is said to be the first white man that ever looked upon the waters of Salt Lake. "Weber River," in the Territory of Utah, received its name from him. In his intercourse with his fellow-men, Mr. Weber was uniformly gentlemenly and courteous, and was much esteemed by those who knew him best."
