James H. Cottral, former well known Jackson county resident, who recently celebrated his 95th birthday, died Saturday night at the home of his son James M. Cottral at Savanna, Ill., according to a message to his granddaughter, Mrs. John Dallager of Maquoketa. The funeral was held today at Sabula and interment took place in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Cottral served for many years as a constable in Jackson county. He was born in Kentucky and on Dec. 4, 1852, married Miss Nancy Laura Taylor in Ohio. The couple with an infant son came to Sabula, then known as Hawkeye, in a covered wagon. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. A, 24th Iowa infantry, a regiment which gained much fame. Only four members of that regiment now survive. Mr. Cottral was wounded seven times during the war and was removed to a hospital in Davenport where he finally recovered and returned to Sabula.
Mrs. Cottral died fifteen years ago, and one son, William, was killed in a railroad accident. Surviving are four children, Mrs. Rhoda Esme of Savanna, James M. of Savanna, Frank E. of Colorado Springs and Mrs. Jessie Murphy of Minneapolis. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
