Rev. J. P. Wagener, Former Bellevue Priest, Dies at Cresco

BELLEVUE – Rev. J. P. Wagener, 61, pastor of St. Joseph’s church at Cresco, and a former assistant at St. Joseph’s church in this city, passed away Sunday evening at his parochial residence. He had been ill for a year, but had been confined to his bed for the past three weeks.

Father Wagener was born at St. Donatus. He attended Loras (Columbia) college, Dubuque. He studied theology at St. Francis Seminary at Milwaukee, Wis.; also at Grand Seminary, Montreal, Canada, and was ordained there by Bishop Ernard on Dec. 20, 1902. He was named assistant to St. Joseph’s parish at Bellevue, Iowa, where he served until appointed pastor at Cresco on May 7, 1910.

Rev. Wagener is survived by one brother, the Rev. A. J. Wagener, of Wesley; four sisters, three being Sisters in the Notre Dame order, namely, Sister Mary Viatora, Oshkosh, Wis.; Sister Mary Sebastian, of St. Joseph’s Orphanage, Green Bay, Wis.; Sister Mary Bernolda, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; and Miss Elizabeth Wagener of Dubuque.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Cresco, the solemn requiem mass was sung by his brother, Rev. A. J. Wagener. The most Reverend Archbishop, Francis J. L. Beckman, S. T. D. of Dubuque, was in charge of the services.
