Maquoketa Record
September 9, 1903

Bernice Edith, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert and Anna Bowman, was born near Calamus, Iowa, August 25, 1899, and died at the home of her parents, two miles south-east of Maquoketa, on Saturday, Sept. 5, 1903, after a short illness of five days, aged 4 years 11 days. Bernice was the idol of her parents and a great favorite in the large family circle, loved and admired by all who knew her. She was precocious in manner and thinking, a kind and affectionate child. She was certainly a great comfort and treasure to her parents, a beautiful and fragrant flower that brought joy and sunshine into the lives of all who came in touch with her. Her pure and innocent life was surely a type of heavenly character and no wonder Jesus said: “Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of heaven.” The floral offerings of friends were quiet elaborate and most truly expressed the type of character of the human flower that the reaper gathered for the heavenly garden. Funeral services were held at the Reformed church on Monday at 3 p.m. with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
