March 23, 1918ANOTHER OLD PIONEER ANSWERS THE FINAL SUMMONS MONDAY
Thomas Trout Passes Away Peacefully at His Home Early Monday Morning.
Funeral Friday. One by one our old and honored citizens are leaving us, and scarcely does a week pass that does not mark the departure of one of Maquoketa’s best friends and the community’s founders. After an illness of about one year, Thomas Trout passed peacefully away at his home on East Locust street Monday morning, March 25, Mr. Trout was born in Origsburg, Pa., February 15, 1835, and when a young man of 20 came to Iowa, settling on a farm just outside the city limits of Maquoketa, then but a village. Some time afterwards he entered the employ of a Mr. Gebert in this city and learned the tinner’s trade, and after accumulating and saving purchased a small hardware and tinware store located where the Odd Fellows’ building now stands. Close application to business and desire for community progressiveness spurred him on to greater success which he achieved in later years.
After retiring from active business life he surrendered the reins to his son, George Trout, now of Chicago and later to his youngest son, J. B. who with a son-in-law, W. J. Matthias now conduct the business. He was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Knittle, who preceded him in death twenty-five years ago. To this union five children were born. Geo. W. of Chicago; Charles L. of New York City; Mrs. Mary Godfrey, Mrs. W. J. Matthias and J. B. Trout of this city also one brother, Frank, also of this city.
Mr. Trout was a great lover of home and his greatest pleasure was derived in the companionship of his home circle and friends, never caring to be identified with any public offices, although ever willing to assist in the upbuild of the city and community. Loyal to his town, its churches, school and true to his friends, his life has been well spent and the ripe old age which he attained was enjoyed amid the environs which he loved so well. His daughter, Mrs. Mary Godfrey, was his constant companion during his declining years and his children have done their utmost to make the sunset of his life pleasant and happy.
The funeral will be held from the late home Friday afternoon, Dr. J. G. Morgan, pastor of the Congregational church officiating. Interment in Mt. Hope cemetery.
