January 13, 1893Mrs. Martha Chapman, wife of Truman Chapman, deceased, died at her residence in South Fork township, Jackson county, Iowa, Jan. 5, 1893, at the advanced age of 83 years and two days, the immediate cause of her death being heart failure. Mrs. Chapman’s maiden name was Parker. She was born January 3, 1810, at Saratoga Springs, in the state of New York, and was married to Mr. Chapman at Caldwell, Warren county, same state, March 19, 1835. They resided at Warrensburg, Warren county, until the spring of 1863, at which time she emigrated with her husband and two sons, Truman and Lewis H., who survive her, to this state, reaching here on May 24, and the following fall bought and moved onto the farm, and remained there until the time of her death. Mr. Chapman died Sept. 29, 1872. They had nine children born to them, six of whom died when small. One son, a soldier in the union army, died during the war at Goldsborough, North Carolina, at the age of 25 years. Mrs. Chapman united with the Baptist church over fifty-six years ago, many years before coming west. She lived the life of a good woman, was an affectionate wife, a kind mother, a good and accommodating neighbor, and always ready to lend a helping hand wherever she could when her assistance was needed. She will be missed by her old friends and neighbors where she has spent the last thirty years of her life as well as by her family.
