Maquoketa Excelsior
January 6, 1893

Mr. John Moore, a prominent citizen of Cascade, slipped and fell on the icy sidewalk in that city yesterday, and was instantly killed. His head struck the sidewalk with such force that his skull was crushed in. Deceased was 60 years of age and the brother-in-law of Ed. Reddin, of this city, who was notified last evening of the sad occurrence. This accident ought to serve as a warning to the Dubuque authorities to enforce the ordinance against permitting snow to remain on the sidewalks. Here is a man who lost his life because of an ice-covered sidewalk, and the same thing may happen in Dubuque. –Dubuque Leader. Yes, and it is quite likely to happen in Maquoketa it steps are not taken to enforce that city ordinance which relates to this subject. A great many of our people have not heeded Mayor Harvey’s recent proclamation on this subject. It is poor policy to threaten without carrying out one’s threat in cases of this kind. Go in, Mayor Harvey; you may lose a subscriber or two, but what of that? You have the honor of being Mayor left, and the satisfaction of having done your duty; and besides we do not think you will lose any subscribers that are worth having unless they have a better reason for stopping their paper than the fact of your having done your duty without fear or favor, without vulgar ostentation. Talk is cheap. Men are judged by what they are, by what they do, not by what they say.
