Maquoketa Excelsior, Jan. 11, 1890.

Died.

Mary Wright-Griffin, January 3, 1890.

She was the daughter of Samuel Wright, long and favorably known in this community. Born in Warren Co., N. Y., Aug. 16, 1833, coming to Iowa with her parents in 1841, married to Harvey Griffin Nov. 20, 1852, summarize the public features of her life. Between these lines there are years of earnest toil and domestic bliss. Entering heartily into all her husband’s thrifty plans, she bravely took her full share of toil. To her husband she was queen, and he to her was king, and they shared the throne of common plans, common hopes and common efforts.

That is a poor life that fails to reach out to other lives. Mrs. Griffin’s life was not thus poor. The need of other homes touched her heart and she, in giving, found herself doubly blessed. Five children came to brighten the home, four dying in infancy; the daughter, Mrs. Della Hanson, was graciously spared to be an abiding comfort to her mother.

Mrs. Griffin’s illness was most painful, but, during its three months, she was patient and resigned. She had made the Methodist Episcopal Church her home, and, in death as in life, found the Gospel of Jesus Christ her support.

The funeral services were conducted at the home on Sunday last by Rev. J. G. Van Ness, and the body was laid to rest in our cemetery.

Mr. Griffin and daughter, and indeed the many who loved this woman of kindly deeds, greatly grieve over her departure.
